Carrying of the Cross :
Christ was forced to carry his cross to the site of his execution.  To the Romans, it embodied a degree of ridicule and mockery in the crucifixion procedure and placed a mark of degradation upon the condemned.  While on route to Golgatha, Christ was followed by a huge crowd - most of whom mocked and even beat him.  On his journey of intense suffering and pain, Christ was also met by those who loved him but were powerless to help him - the women of Jerusalem.  These included Mary, Jesus' mother, her sister-in-law, Mary the wife of Cleophas, Mary Magdalene and the women named Veronica, who would wipe Jesus' brow in an attempt to comfort him.  This painting by Imhoff details this brief but heart-wrenching exchange between Christ, his mother Mary and the other women.

The Annunciation :
The Annunciation is the announcement made to the Virgin Mary by Archangel Gabriel that she was to become the mother of Jesus and her acceptance of the will of God.

The central point of the theology of Mary is that she is the Mother of God.  This is because she was foreordained by God from the beginning.  She was placed in the singular position of being the Lord's most intimate associate while he was on Earth, and upon her death.
